Max Speed in 4H?

I was in South Dakota last week, near the badlands...and I was having some fun on a red dirt/gravel/sand/clay road. Doing about 70 or so in 4H (only about 5 miles, wanted the extra control...didnt really NEED 4wd, but it made me feel better LOL), speeds approached 85 on occasion, but no triple digits.

What worries me is when I stopped at the stop sign before turning onto the freeway entrance...the smell of clutch burn filled the cab.

I was the only vehicle running in a visible radius...so it came from my truck. I checked the owners manual and it says nothing about a max speed in 4h, only in 4L. So is there one? There never was on any other 4wd I ever had. I have had the Hemi over 100 in 4wd and it never complained. Just to be sure, i checked all the fluids and they are fine, no burning or shavings. So I am stumped. Maybe the truck just has not ever been to that speed in 4wd. The roads were only slightly curvy, mostly straight with hills.

It seems like I remember 45MPH being the top "safe" speed (mechanically).

I believe it said 55mph in the owners manual and not to go above it of something detrimental could happen
I just re-read the manual, it is not in there. I know its not a subaru, but I would think it could/should handle 70mph. 45mph?

Here is what I found in the manual...per Dodge:
4WD LOCK
Four-Wheel Drive Lock Range - This range locks the front
and rear driveshafts together forcing the front and rear
wheels to rotate at the same speed. This range provides
additional traction for loose, slippery road surfaces only.

4WD LOW
Four-Wheel Drive Low Range - This range provides low
speed four-wheel drive. It locks the front and rear
driveshafts together forcing the front and rear wheels to
rotate at the same speed. This range provides additional
traction and maximum pulling power for loose, slippery
road surfaces only. Do not exceed 25 mph (40 km/h).
Thats exactly how I used it.

I checked the manual and believe the 55mph is referring to shifting only and not max speed while in 4H. :4-dontknow: Here is the text from page 317 of the manual:

Shifting Procedure – Manually Shifted Transfer
Case
2H ⇔ 4H
Shifting between 2H and 4H can be made with the
vehicle stopped or in motion. If the vehicle is in motion,
shifts can be made up to 55 mph (88 km/h). With the
vehicle in motion, the transfer case will engage/
disengage faster if you momentarily release the accelerator
pedal after completing the shift. Apply a constant
force when shifting the transfer case lever.

There is nothing written for mine either. I have routinely taken my truck in 4HI at highway speeds in the winter (but never on a dry road... bad juju). There is no handling issues, but a max of 55MPH is recommended on my F-350. As far as I look at it, in 4HI, I treat it like AWD, it's fine at speed provided you have no vibration. If you have the vibration, then do not go that fast in 4HI.

For what it is worth, I have been driving 4wd for years and beleive it to be a good idea not to drive at the speeds you normally would in 2wd on or off road. I have never had any 4wd issues in the 30+ years of plowing snow and off roading. I doubt for very I have ever gone over 40 mph in 4wd. A lot more can go wrong in 4wd and higher speeds don't help matters.

Just went through my 2010 manual, all I could find was a statement about shifting into 4H below 55 but no max speed while in 4H. It also said not to exceed 25mph 4L.

I don't see a problem operating at hwy speeds in 4H and have done it in the past but I tend to keep my speed down to 55 or below because I figure if I have to use 4H that means the conditions are not right for anything faster, safely.

i could have stayed in 2wd, but wifey was nervous, lol. I was just wondering If there was a max speed, because I clearly could not find it.

So i guess there isnt one. But probably a good idea to keep it below 55 in the future.

So when are you going to change your location in the UserCP?

I have done highway speed several times in my 2005 and in my 2009 never had any bad smells or noises . And I would think if you can shift into 4H up to 55mph then it should be no issue to go 15mph higher to 70 mph . Just my thoughts that there not going to let you shift it at its max speed allowed .

I Agree. I just read my owners manual again. I think if there was a certain max speed in 4H they would have put it in the manual?
