Mud Flaps, to get or not to get?

Hey guys,

I always wanted to avoid mud flaps because I don't find them to be very visually appealing; however, if they will protect the body of the truck then I'll get them.

Any advice on whether or not they're beneficial or necessary? If so, any advice, what kind, brand, etc...???

Thanks!

Even down where i live in what is actually the desert, a little water settles on the unpaved roads & loosens the clay soil, the tires grab it & coat the underside of my truck, so i keep the mudflaps on that the dealer installed as part of the vehicle prep.

I just turn the stainless advertising plate around, so that the ad is not visable

After you add the flares, drive down a muddy road and take a look at the truck. Then estimate what would be missing when you add mud guards. Shortly after I purchased my 2014, I drove through a fair bit of sloppy snow/salt mix. I was amazed at all the crap thrown up on the truck particularly above and to the rear of the front wheel opening and side rails.

I immediately ordered a set of Husky guards for both the front and rear. They don't stop it but do make a great difference. It will also save a lot of time cleaning road tar from repairs off your truck.

I put a set on mine after about a year, the rocks pelting the rockers starts to get annoying, and Ram does not use chipgaurd paint on the rockers like some other brands so I think they are good to have if you want to avoid rock ships and damage from winter roads.

I think they're a must have to help protect the investment...I went with WeatherTech. They fit perfectly and blend in well so they do not stand out.

I'm not crazy about the appearance of them but I have ordered front and back duraflaps. The front will protect the Amp Research steps I just put on and the back will protect my travel trailer. I didn't get the ones with stainless weights because I want them to be as visually unobtrusive as possible.

Fender flares to me are really just cosmetic...they add a different look and style to your truck, but not much for protection. I have them and like how they look. Mud guards are meant to add protection from sand, rocks/gravel, etc being kicked up by your tires.

Do the husky or weathertech mudflaps work with fender flares like the Bushwacker extend-a-flares? I've seen the ones that work with the oem style. I want put on the bigger flares, but I'm not sure if the mudflaps would work with them.

Looks nice.

I've had Gatorback gunmetal RAM mudflaps in my garage for a month now and just haven't put them on. I think they are awesome looking and I want the protection but then I like the truck the way it is.

Yes..................

Looks like the "weather tech" is the way to go. Shouldn't collect any grime to cause any "etching" like my molded ones did.

Thanks for sending "pictures" with your post.

Yea, the front weathertech's have an option to install a third screw in the wheel liner. I only installed the screw on the drivers side one and when I took the flaps off to check for any damage that was the only flap that had some slight marring to the paint. I think the thin wheel well liner moves around and in turn moves the mudflap around on the paint so I think its better the liner is not connected to the flap as none of the others showed any marks. Overall I like them though and did not put the extra screw in when I put them back on.

Damn, I took another look...............

I ordered a set but when I took another look at my running board it only gives me about an inch back to work with from the bottom of the fender.

No problem with the back ones. I don't want to just put the back ones on and then another brand on the front. It just wouldn't look right.

I also was going to get my two front door windows tinted today but the guy told me I would get pulled over as it wasn't legal to tint them.

He agreed there are a lot of cars and trucks with them tinted, but they are breaking the law and could get fined.

So I'm not having a very good day as I was REALLY looking forward to getting my windows tinted to match the back ones. :4-dontknow:

According to this you could tint down to 50% but not the 20% it would take to match the rears.

Hi I must have missed something in your replies, do you have flaps or flares? And which one would you suggest ? My cottage in Northern Ontario is a on a gravel road but other than that I am pretty much on pavement. What is your suggestion for my new Ram 2500
SLT brilliant black with only factory running boards installed. Any and all help to save my paint would be appreciated. Thank you

Mud flaps for sure, I got mine at the Ram store as soon as I signed papers. I made sure they are out far enough to catch all the mud and rocks and I also installed mine a little higher than I wanted but on a lot of oilfield leases there are ruts and I didn't want to back into a rut and tear them off. My opinion, just saying !!
