Good day fellow Ram owners

I have a 1500 SLT 2013 with power steering issues. It started with me trying to back out of my driveway and as soon as I started turning the steering wheel violently shaked then stopped. Then shaked again when I tried. But was fine the third time. Then when for a drive but it did it again but this time power steering was gone and it was hulk power steering. Till I was almost home then it came back on its own. The next day it happened again. (It’s the electric power steering). I started looking around for another rack to replace this one but new ones are hard to come by. And the closest auto wrecker is 3 hours away. So I was thinking of repairing it my self. But was having a hard time finding info.
Does anyone know where I can find some information on this.

Most of the electronic power steering racks have a motor attached with an internal toothed belt like a timing belt. When the belts break or jump a tooth they do what your describing. Last I checked they're not serviceable and pre-calibrated by the manufacturer so that you have to buy a new one when the old one goes out. I'm sure someone somewhere has figured out how to do this but parts for them are impossible to get.

crappy idea + poor design + poor parts = one big fiasco. One more reason I'm keeping my 2007.

I wish you luck in finding a new one

On the Rams, when an EPS unit is replaced the truck’s computer (I don’t know which one) has to be configured/sync’ed to the computer in the new EPS unit. I’m not aware of any further calibration. This information is from various sources I have read in the past but I have not done this myself. Just passing on what I recall from my readings.

The few I have done are similar. The calibration is programed into the onboard module at the manufacturer. On the ford ones at least. If it skips a tooth on the belt all sorts of issues arise and even the dealership I worked at couldn't repair them, only replace. That was back in 2015 though...maybe its gotten better.

Either way It was enough that I simply don't want to ever mess with owning one. I'll keep my old stuffs.
