Hello all -

I'm glad to have found this forum. The issues described regarding the wheel sticking in left turns at highway speeds is exactly what my 2019 Big Horn has had from day one. Of course, on dealership mechanic test rides, it doesn't happen. I'm taking it in today for an oil change and I'll bring up these posts to them. Hopefully they can tap into a greater bank of knowledge from other locations that have dealt with this issue, and they can fix it on my truck. Hopefully it's not another "well we don't see a problem so we can't do anything right now."

Again I have a 2019 Ram Limited which was built in July 2018 and delivered August. Since purchased I have the same problem. Over 30mph in 30 degree left hand turn vehicle will not correct itself without physically returning it to center. Have had a star case with Chrysler since September. Yesterday the dealership advised Chrysler engineers resolved problem, steering shaft is binding and will be replaced. You need to get the dealership to open a star case. This is not the first case Chrysler has resolved involving this problem.

I just dropped mine off. This dealership hasn't heard of a case such as this, and pretty much from the get-go dismissed this as being a widespread problem. They said the tech will review star cases and advise. I'm already dismissing anything useful coming from their inspection.

How did y'all get your dealerships to address this effectively? Dodge Customer Service, who I've had to deal with before, promise call backs that never come.

I took it in to the service department at the dealership as soon as I detected the problem. Service manager drove the truck with me and verified that in a left hand turn over 30mph the truck would continue in that turn until physically corrected. They opened a star case in September however this is the third time I have left the truck with them.. Chrysler has given them many possible solutions which I will not go into, and as I said the conscientious of their trial and error is the steering shaft binds in the left hand turn. Awaiting now the go ahead to replace the the shaft. To answer your question how did I get them to open a case, I personally know everyone at the dealership. I have bought 5 dodge or ram vehicles from them including a Challenger Hellcat. Plus having lived in this small city in Mississippi for 30 years and making my living in law enforcement this may have given me an edge as to listening to me. Hope this helps. You may have to use the old "I'm going to give this to my Attorney" trick.

Make sure they take it out on the highway to get it up to speed and into a curve that mimics what you've been feeling. Usually the techs will just drive it out of the dealership and down the block or through a parking lot. If your having the same problem I experienced, it took a little bit of driving, and then presented itself in longer sweeping left hand curves at speeds over about 25-30 mph. When the service manager took it for a test drive at speeds and conditions as I explained to him, the steering stuck to the left and scared the hell out of him. They finally changed the rack and pinon which fixed the problem.

I took it on a drive with the service manager a few months ago when I first detected the issue, but of course, I couldn't replicate it. We shrugged it off.

I'm not sure if they drove it yesterday - I don't believe so. The advisor mentioned nothing looked worn out (obviously) and that they had opened a star case with Chrysler. Let's see where this goes... I'm still experiencing the issue intermittently. Something is definitely off.

This recall has all the elements to suggest the poor ground is the culprit in most of these cases. I've only had my 2019 Laramie for a week and have not experienced this problem with a lot of mountain driving. My usual driving will almost always result in left and right steering at 55-65 MPH in the Kern River Canyon.
I am definitely going to check the grounds to see if I find a poor connection.

Steering wheel feels Stuck in turning left

Ram has replaced my rack and pinion steering column as the solution to the truck holding on a left hand turn over 30mph and not returning to center. I had the recall on the Battery ground possibly causing the power steering to go out before Ram came back with the solution to the steering and this recall did not resolve my steering problem. So far with the replacement of the rack and pinion steering column my truck track perfectly. However I will wait until I have a few thousand more miles on it before I am completely sure that this was the problem.. If the recall on the battery ground appears to correct your steering problem in a left hand turn then I hope it was the solution for your truck, but it did not resolve my problem. I will add that at times I could not replicate my problem, but it always came back.. The steering problem started in early September and the dealership opened a Star case then. My truck was at the dealership on 3 separate occasions for a week at a time while they dealt with Ram's technicians for possible remedies. The rack and pinion resolution came in early February and was installed last week. I have a an appointment this week to resolve the brake pedal recall. Hope this is the end of all problems with the 2019 Ram trucks.

And of course... I spoke too soon. Driving around yesterday was beautiful - but today on a long drive to work, the same issue arose on the highway. It seemed to stop on a few occasions, but nonetheless, the issue is still there. A case manager is supposed to do a post-dealer visit follow up with me today. I will mention to them that the problem persists. Let's see where we go from here.

Orrin - do you think I could reference your case/case number when the manager follows up with me? Perhaps I'm too optimistic, but maybe that would allow them to see a recurring issue, and provide my truck with the same attention it needs. It's pretty evident that you and I, amongst many others, have the same steering quirk. I'm hoping to avoid the "bring it back to the dealership" followed by the dealership claiming they can't find anything wrong. What a headache...

Kevin, I do not have the Star Case # at this time. I have an appt. on Wednesday at the dealership to correct the recall on the brake pedal possibly falling off and will also get all the paperwork involving all the dealing with the technicians at Ram. Further if the Star Case # is not with the paperwork I will get it from the service manager. You are welcome to all my paperwork if needed. Hang in there. I feel the steering column(rack and pinion) is the solution. I know in talking with the service manager over the 6 months dealing with Ram that my truck was not the only one with this problem.. In fact the dealership had two nineteens delivered that had the same problem. I'll touch base with you late Wednesday.

I had a similar problem on a completely different Chrysler product years ago so take this with a grain of salt. My '95 Eagle Talon AWD had a squealing noise when turning the steering lock to lock. The dealer bled the rack then replaced the rack then told me they all do that. Then the steering wheel started to not return to center. Fed up with the dealer, I took it to an alignment shop. Sitting in the lounge area, the mechanic came in and said "You better come look at your car". While they were moving it to put on the rack, the left front ball joint had completely failed and the suspension had collapsed. If that had happened at 80 mph driving there the car might have flipped!

I had it towed to the dealer and the ball joint replaced under warranty. About 2 weeks later they recalled all the ball joints and replaced the other side.

So it just might be a ball joint and not the rack.

KevinJace I tried to send you a private message via the forum, but not sure it was sent. So if you still want the info on Ram tech solution to the left hand turn and you did not get my PM here is my email: ofuelling@gmail.com and I will resend to yours.
Orrin - I just sent you an email.

FYI for everyone else - my case manager followed up today after being out for a few days and ended up talking to my dealership. A service advisor told her he'd reach out to me to schedule an appointment. 3 hours later, I decided to call myself and got the advisor on the line. I was simply told to take my truck and its problem and have it diagnosed and fixed elsewhere. I feel like a very valued buyer. Just another repeating story of the dealer not giving a crap once the vehicle is off their lot and money is in their account. Executive Dodge in Wallingford, CT.

I am having the same issue. Took to service center and they said they couldn’t replicate the issue. After I have told them to get on highway and take the long curve going to the left. Also told them which highway and exit that is 4 miles away. I request that they try again and they just call me and said the same thing. This is a waste of time when clearly there’s an issue.

Hey Guys,

Proud owner of 2019 Laramie 1500. I am having an odd issue. When going forward, and turning left, and especially when "holding" the wheel left around a bend or round-a-bout, it feels as if the wheel gets "stuck" into the turn and wants to hold left, you have to add more than normal amount of force to get the wheel back straight. My truck has the advanced safety package and I have completely disabled the lane keep assist feature for testing purposes. I had a buddy of mine drive it as well and he noticed it without me saying a word. Any insight on this before I make a trip to the dealer? Also when parked or not moving forward but in drive, I can turn the wheel freely without this feeling or issue, it appears to only happen when driving and appx any speed over 20mph or so.
I had the same problem with my 2019 Limited within a month after purchase. Your dealership should check the STAR cases through the rapid response team as this problem has been identified. If you need the whole ball of wax here it is. They need to replace the rack and pinion, which can be called the steering arm or gear. Here is the part number (F) 68264559AH (GEAR). I have 20,000 miles on the truck since it was installed under warranty and have had no problem. The actual problem was found by my service department and given to the rapid response team who then authorized the replacement. You should have no problem with replacement under warranty.
