I have a 13 shortbed that has I think 5ft7 bed. Need a topper for camping this summer and dont want to spend a grand on a new one. Anyone know if any of the old 04-05 f150's toppers fit on the new rams? Or any other make/model? I know it s more than just dimensions that make them fit.

Thanks.

if it is a rcsb it is a 6.5 ft box. i just bought a topper for mine and was looking at 3rd gen tops but when i came across the right one i saw the difference. the tailgate bows out on 4th gens so the top i bought has a cap that fits over the bowed tailgate that is connected to the back door of the topper.

I always called them camper shells. To answer your question, without extensive modification, you will not get one for another brand of truck to fit yours. I really don't see very many camper shells on trucks anymore come to think of it. I guess a lot of people who used to own them now use tonneaus.

They are still pretty popular up here where we have some real weather and use our truck beds to haul something once in awhile.:)

You need to get one designed for your model but model year depends on whether dimensions changed with the newer model years or not. A topper made for a 13 RAM should fit a 14--not sure about before that. I would find the biggest topper sellers around and ask them what fits--and if they have any used ones around. I know one in my state takes used ones in from all over and has several rows of them for sale. A lot of them they get from car dealers when they take in a trade truck that has a topper.

And FWIW Ram's "badonka butt" tailgate means that no topper will fit on the top perfectly. That butt is a pain in the ass and a big miss for Ram designers IMO Even for brand new toppers the way they cover it is with a piece of plastic that attaches to the bottom of your topper back window--which then sticks out back and down. Look is not great and it gets in the way of smooth opening and closing. But the real problem is that lip on top of the badonka butt loads up with grim real bad--or up here, snow and ice. Can't tell you how many times I've had to chip crap away so I could get to the handle to open the back topper window this winter.

I think the curve on top of the tailgate is some sort of aerodynamic feature, but it makes a comfortable seat for sitting in the truck bed facing the cab with the tailgate up. It accumulates water, but we have only had ice here twice in the past 15 years so I never thought about that..

Anyway, to supplement what dawoodsman said, all 4th gen ram beds are the same among years (obviously you still need a camper shell for your size bed). The only differences between the beds of my dad's '09 and my '13 are that mine has a power locking tailgate (new for 2013) and his is manual only, and his bed is blue while mine is white.

My sense from having toppers on trucks for several decades is that the fit problem between brands is biggest on the width dimensions. A topper for an 8 foot bed chevy will not fit an 8 foot bed ram. Might be close on length but each one will have different width bed rails and those widths might be wider at one point than another as you go up and down the truck--mostly for aerodynamic purposes I think. A topper sized for a ford might hang over the side of the side bedrails a bit much on a ram in places--or it might not completely cover the top of the side bedrails.
