Anything more than what the owners manual calls for is 'optional', and like any option,,, opinions will vary! =)

 

Walmart 5w20 is my personal favorite.

Any of the full synthetics are a good choice Amzoil, RP, etc.

A good conventional is also good if you're doing regular oil changes. Synthetic really comes into its own for long drain intervals.

 

i use penzoil platinum and a mopar filer. easily gotten in wal mart, get the filter from autozone. 7000 mile oci. so far no hemi tick, that i notice, at 42000 miles.

 

I use Pennzoil full synthetic. Hemis are typically pretty easy on oil so as long as its the proper weight and made by a reputable manufacturer you'll be good to go.

 

you have to use 5-20 regardless of the brand you choose.

 

Pennzoil Platinum Full synthetic 5W-20 is my own personal preference since it meets the engine oil selection recommended -API Certified and Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395.

 

The MS-6395 rating is a bit elusive,,, and not very easy to interpret,,,

The list of MS-6395 compliant oils is pretty much 'all over the map' as far as synthetic, conventional, Brand name, no name, etc.

As there does not seem to be any obvious 'rhyme or reason' that the average Consumer can see between MS-6395 compliant and "non-compliant" oils,,, eh,,, I'm not going to loose any sleep over it.

I do think it's a great way for Mopar to sell oil, though!

PP FS is highly regarded as a great oil. Even if it wasn't MS-6395 rated, I wouldn't hesitate to use it,,, (if it was what I wanted)

 

A very competent mechanic told me that carbon build up when using conventional oil vs. synthetic is a potential problem for engins that shut four cylinders down when the demand for power is low, (Eco mode". If the vehicle is driven gently and does not see high revs from time to time carbon build up can occure and this is less likley with synthetic oil because it doesn't break down as easily as conventional oil. I'm no expert but His comment seemed to make sense.

 

I really like amsoil, but it is spendy...not sure if the extra money spent is honestly worthwhile. Any brand name full synthetic is probably close to the same.

 

another platinum user here with 7000 mile oci.

 

bought a 2007 dodge 1500, 5,7 hemi with 118000 milles. dont know what type oil was used except 5w20, well kept truck, what type 5w20 oil should i use on oil change. doesnt use a drop of oil in 5000 miles. should i go full synthetic 5w20, i **** castrol or mobile one?

 

can't go wrong with full synthetic, sure would be better than a blend. Try this, I use it for my truck and other cars over the past 15 years and it has but solid.... this link is for your Ram.

Get either filter on the page and you're good! Testing shows it is one of the best synthetics. Up to you though as Castrol/Mobil are up there as well.
