Correct fluid doesn't just mean OEM. Pennzoil, Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Mobil are all good oils despite not being the "Mopar" oil
I didn't say correct as in brand. What I'm saying is the correct 'type' of fluids to use is all in the owners manual if one cares to read it. As you say, they are good oils. By the time all the strangers offer their advice on what to use the job could have been done by now by just going to the dealership and buying from them. If we were all in agreement on which is best there'd be a clear winner but thats certainly not the case.

Really, "MOPAR" doesn't stand for quality one minute. Its just a way for dodge to rip you off. The Owners manual is there to make sure they get your money.
Think about it. Do you really think Amsoil or any other brand isn't out for your money? Do you not wonder why Amsoil doesn't say just use what the manufacturer says to use? If you think Dodge is trying to rip you off why did you buy one?

Amazing how these oil posts always turn in fan boy comments when at the end of the day they all do the same job equally.

That's interesting, somebody should call Amsoil about it and ask if it really is for the BW44-44. I would but I'm not in the US.

The BW 44-44 is used by Ford and Ram so its pretty popular and it makes sense there would (finally) be an aftermarket fluid for it. I was just going to buy the Mopar fluid from the dealer, but this is probably no more expensive and is likely better. I wouldn't pay someone to change the t-case fluid, its just too easy; easier than engine oil.
I called Amsoil this morning and they pointed me to the data sheet and confirmed its use for the BW 44-44 T-Case. The data sheet has the Mopar part number listed in the specifications as approved for use.

I purchased 2 quarts of Mopar 68089195AA Transfer Case Lubricant for Borg Warner 44-44 Transfer Case on Ebay for $36.00 with free shipping. Also works for the Borg Warner 44-45 Transfer case. Shop around. The Stealership is the last place I would go. Not sure what the Amsoil lube costs, but the Mopar stuff is synthetic as well. -Glen

Well just have a look at Amsoils website. in the notes it says to add Mopar oil additive for the rear diff

or Just get RedLine oil and you dont have to worry about the additive https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0045FE6OW...ef=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2272ET0CNJD0J&coliid=I3IQECXNGTDS68.
I got Redline for my upcoming diff fluid change. I ordered 75W140 for the rear, 75W85 for the front per the manual (only Mopar and Redline make 75W85), but I ordered a bottle of their friction modifier too. It meets the specs of the Mopar FM and IDK if I really need it, but I want it just in case the oil doesn't have quite enough blended in. I don't think it'll really be a problem though since IIRC its a pretty standard proportion.

The 44-45 uses ATF+4

You said get it from the parts department; AFAIK parts departments only sell Mopar fluids. Sorry for any confusion :wavey:

I don't know about that. I had the dealer run my Vin# and I have a BW44-45 transfer case. Also Amsoil's website lists the same fluid for the BW44-44 & BW44-45 transfer cases with the Mopar equivalent being 68089195AA. http://www.amsoil.com/lookup/auto-and-light-truck/2012/ram/1500-pickup/4915431/us-volume/ . -Glen

I don't since the 44-44 in my truck doesn't use ATF+4, but since the manual states under transfer case:

We recommend you use MOPAR® ATF+4® Automatic
Transmission Fluid.

and then goes on to have a second entry for the 44-44 specifying:

We recommend you use MOPAR® BW44–44 Transfer
Case Fluid.

I would be using ATF+4 in a 44-45 if I had one

Thunder is this the first time changing the transfer case and axle fluids at around 60k? You pretty much gave me the same idea to do mine myself next summer since I can get all the fluids for around $130 or less.

Whats your plan for the trans now?

I am at about 52,000 and will be changing my axles and t case soon. This will be the first time I've ever changed diff or t case fluid on a vehicle.

Does your Laramie have the "auto" feature?
Laramies come with the 44-44 with the auto 4wd.

pulling the covers?

You know it; drain holes are not enough, I want to look at my gears and make sure there's no chips in them or metal at the bottom and that the C-clips are still in place.

I've ordered Redline 75W85 for the front, 75W140 for the rear and a bottle of limited slip additive just in case it needs extra. I got a lube oil pump too, all I need now is RTV and some brake cleaner to clean out the cover when I pull it.

What are you going with for the T-case fluid?

It threw me off when he said he had the 44-45 on his Laramie.

I was just going to get the Mopar fluid, but now that Amsoil has an option I may get it. I will probably do the t case at a later date than the diffs; I'm not going to split the case but I will wiggle my inspection magnet around in the drain hole and shine a light in there.

I would do the Rockland Standard part time conversion:

but it seems they can't figure out the electrical aspect quite yet:

If I do end up needing a new T-case I will be getting a 44-45, whether they will do it as a warranty claim or whether I have to pay out of pocket.

Thunderhorse, Thanks for the clarification. I did crawl under my truck and could not locate a tag on the transfer case, that's why I had a dealership run my Vin. #. I thought I had the BW 44-44 transfer case. I was surprised that I was told otherwise. Yesterday, I crawled under my truck, and finally found a barely readable sticker that confirmed I do have the BW 44-44 transfer case, and not the BW 44-45 part time transfer case. I have read my owner's manual and it states that ATF+4 is recommended for all transfer cases except the BW 44-44 transfer case. On the plus side, I bought the correct fluid for my transfer case, and what I've learned is the Dodge dealers here on Long Island are a bunch of morons. So be skeptical of the dealer parts departments, and don't believe what you read on internet dealer websites. Thanks very much. Regards, Glen
