Come Along vs. Ratchet Strap

Hey guys,

On my trip last weekend, I ended up having to pull out my hitch mount winch and get it all set up to pull myself back a few feet to get a log out from my front suspension. It didn't take all that much force to pull me backwards and I had to submerge part of my winch to get it in the hitch.

So, I'm looking at getting a manual come along for light winching when I don't want/need to break out the big heavy winch.

Been debating whether to get a traditional cable set up or something like this:

I'd probably cut the hooks off and replace them with D-links.

Perhaps something like a boat strap winch bolted to a hitch stinger?

Thoughts?

I'd definitely go with a come-along before that tie down, it's more purpose built for the task.

Come along, I love a high lift by absolutely hate it for winching. There's a reason the winch made it seem easy. Sounds like you already have a good set up. I have a come along and a high lift but if I am stuck the first option I go with is pulling out the warn control and plugging it it.

My 2 cents

definantly not a Ratchet strap... I don't care how many lbs its rated for, if you ever needed to use it to get out of a sticky situation getting the right amount of leverage is really tough. I had to use one once in a recovery operation because its all I had available.. and the whole time I wished I had a come-a-long. Better yet a High Lift Jack.. so many purposes with one of them. They are almost the Offroader's "Swiss Army Knife"

I do have a hi-lift jack, but like Salt, I'm not keen on using it for winching. But I suppose I'm only going to be using it for the case where I don't want to lug the winch out of the tool box.

I guess both the ratchet strap and the hi-lift suffer from the same downfall which is limited range. You're only going to get a pull the length of the hi-lift or about 12" with a ratchet strap before you have to reset.

I think I'll go with a come along as my winch backup and keep the hi-lift as a second backup.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm not an expert by any means but I have spent my fair share of time around ratchet straps and come-alongs on the farm. For what you are looking to do with it, I would say the obvious choice is the come-along rather than the ratchet strap. I have alway thought that ratchet straps were meant for securing loads, not vehicle recovery. And plus you will be able to get a lot more leverage on a come-along vs that short little lever on a strap.

Agreed, initially I was simply looking for a come-along that used a strap rather than a cable. I don't like cable; It gets all crossed on itself and gets kinked etc. The ratchet strap I posted the link to seemed to have a fairly substantial lever on it, but you're only going to get a short pull with it before the strap build up gets in the way of the mechanism.
