Fan Clutch

I purchased my Ram in San Antonio, drove it through the summer without issue. Roughly a month ago my family and I moved to Wyoming, since then my fan clutch will not disengage. When I dropped my truck off for its first oil change I asked the service manager about the jet engine sound coming out from under my hood. I get my truck back and the sound is gone...two days later it is back. I take my truck back in and one of the mechanics goes for a ride and acknowledges the sound is in fact the clutch fan. Three days later they "supposedly" replace it. I use the word supposedly because it has been two days and my truck is making the same noise! My mpg has gone down noticeably and to be quite frank I'm pissed. My truck has 7700 miles on it. Any thoughts?

I wonder if its possibly the electric condenser fan? The Hemi equipped Rams have 2 fans, one mechanical viscous clutch fan to cool the radiator, and an electrical A/C condenser fan inside the fan shroud.

Anytime the A/C compressor is commanded on the electric fan will be running. This includes defrost mode because the A/C compressor is commanded on to draw moister out of the air so you don't have moist air being blown at the windshield.

Try manually controlling the HVAC system to vent mode and see if the noise goes away?

Just a thought....

I had this issue on my 2013. I drove it for over a year complaining to the dealership about the noise (before I new what it was) each service, however just didn't push enough to have it looked into seriously due to time, etc.

Eventually I had a complaint about the transmission.... and they replaced the viscous fan clutch. This solved the noise and improved the mileage. Anyways maybe this will help. I'm sure the part was the viscous fan clutch, solved the jet engine noise where the clutch doesn't release until high rpms.

Dropped my truck off yesterday and the dealer replaced the fan clutch for a second time. So far today the sound is gone and my truck doesn't sound "congested" as my wife puts it.
I've noticed the jet engine sound some too. Weird thing is the truck was totally cold..... when it needs less cooling anyway. One of our newer work trucks of 8 had a bad clutch fan that had to be replaced in a 2012 I think. Fan just barely moved, so opposite problem. Dealer originally said it couldn't possibly be a problem unless the truck overheats. It had the clutch fan and an electric.... so the electric had to work harder.

The kits i've seen replace the crank driven one with a thermostatic controlled fan that will turn on right around the same temp as when the stock fan clutch engages or have a controller so you can adjust when it comes on. You leave the factory electric can alone or use the same wiring to hook up the replacement 2nd fan if you buy a dual fan kit.
