So I drained my oil amd put 7 qts in along with the royal purple 10-48 filter. This filter is way smaller than the dealer filter that was there. So maybe I should have put less than 7qt. Anyways I got the truck to operating temp and shut it off. Pulled the dipstick amd let the truck sit for 5 min then checked the level. It's right on the first hump above the "safe" area on the stick. Is that way to much or what?

By the way the oil filter is in the worst spot ive ever seen. It just spills all over the steering rack if your not carful!

Every time that i go to the dealership for oil changes
The oil is always above the FULL mark by maybe 1/2 quart

If your level bothers you, just back off the oil filter enough to drain some oil off, if that is an option.
Just wrap some Saran Wrap or Aluminum Foil around anything below the filter
You can also use a Quart Baggie over the filter itself

I only became concerned because one day I started the truck and I was burning oil out the exhaust pipes for like 10 sec out the exhaust on start up. It also feels like it's down on power at high rpm. The royal purple filter is tiny. Way smaller than the mopar filter. Every now and then I get this wierd rattle noise when I first start the truck too. It's always done it even with the factory oil. This is my first diy change for synthetic. The oem oil is conventional right? This is a 2016 truck

So the factory oil is regular conventional penzoil?

Real reason I'm here is to find out if the oil filled past the "safe" mark is ok, it's on the bump past the safe area... haha I'm kinda off on a tangent here.

I doubt a little overfill will hurt. If it was overfilled enough, I believe what can happen is that the oil will foam and not lubricate as well.
Just to be safe, it is easy enough to drain a little.
When changing oil, I initially put in about 6-6.5 quarts, let the vehicle run for awhile and then top it off. That way I ensure not overfilling it.

Yeah I will definitely put in 6 next time. I'm thinking the smaller filter is to blame for this. It might have a half qt over. Is the first hump past the fill line half qt high or a qt high? Hard to really know.

I think an inch on the dipstick equates to about a quart IIRC. You would need to be more than a quart high to be frothing oil in the crankcase

It's past the "safe" area is what I'm trying to say. I'm not sure what the first hump past the "safe" area means. It's not in the small safe section it's a little past it! Sorry I wish I could take a pic of the dip stick. I'm just trying to see if anybody know how much oil is over filled and what the first hump above the sage area means! Can anybody tell me that?

Thank you thunderhorse. I was getting worried. Next time I will definitely put 6qt in and then top off from there. Lesson learned. You use royal purple too right? You can agree that the 10-48 filter is way smaller than the mopar filter?

I use their oil, but Fram Ultra Synthetic filters. I have not seen an RP filter in person to know

The 13 and up with electric power steering uses a smaller filter. I think it is a little over 6.5 quarts with the smaller filter.
