Hi, first: I'm not a mechanic. My check engine light came on. My son put a OBD dongel in and we see two codes: P000B & P0016. I have a trip (1200 mi) coming up and not sure if I can get the truck fixed before I leave. We disabled the code and the truck drove just fine (Cruise control worked, overdrive worked, all was good). Soon as we turned the truck off/on the check engine light came back on, and stuff stopped working (CC, OD, ect). I can disable and all is good. My question is: is it bad to keep disabling the check engine light (so it drives fine) and can I wait a week (driving everyday) to get it serviced. THanks for any help.

Sons like a question my son would ask em.

No it is not alright to drive a vehicle, by wiping out/resetting it's Engine codes, unless you know exactly what the cause of the codes are and have a deep understanding of all potential consequences.

If it was ok to drive the truck after those codes trip, then tripping the codes wouldn't disable those features. They are there to protect vehicle components; if you keep clearing the codes then there is a good chance that the problem that is causing the CEL to come on will cause further damage to other components.

Fixing the issue(s) now will result in cheaper overall maintenance costs and less net down time
