I am not familiar with transmission temperature but getting to know it since we'll be towing this summer and wanted to know what the normal temps were
We are at 56 000 km (a little over 30 000 miles) and we had the transmission flushed at the Dodge dealer. I have been looking at the transmission numbers on the EVIC and although it is cold here right now, around 35 degrees outside, the transmission temp were up to 185 degrees and it went up to 195 at one point. This was normal highway driving, no hills, nothing in the back. These numbers seem high. Is that normal? Worried.

The sensor is located inside the transmission itself and not in a line or the cooler. You're seeing 195F with an ambient temp of 35F because there is a thermostat built into the cooler, so even if it were 70F outside, you'd still see a minimum operating temp in this range. I haven't seen a published number from Chrysler regarding max fluid temp, but 220F is pushing the edge of what I would call a safe limit.

Since I don't know anything about transmission, I am trying to educate myself and i do appreciate your input and help :)
Pardon my ignorance and the stupid questions but won't towing anything bring the temps up considerably? I just worry about 195 + towing will raise temps.
The 195 I got the other day was highway driving, flat terrain and 35F
I took a drive today about same terrain, 24F, small country roads and it didn't climb up above 175, numbers were much lower.

I only have had my truck for 2500 miles so take it for what its worth but the other day I drove 400 Miles, 200 miles one way and back in the same day and the highest I ever saw on this trip was 127 and I was monitoring bc i saw a thread with a guy asking if the 120s was to low. This was an empty truck but with about 1000lbs of people but not towing. This was however driving in the hilll of the Catskills in NY and approx 32F out. Personally I think 195 is high especially if not towing anything I would watch it but from what i've seen 160-180 is normal operating and 220 is where you begin to overheat! Hope that helps

The stock transmission cooler on the Hemi equipped trucks are actually pretty good for 98% driving and towing needs.

When I was out for a drive toda, the outside temperature was around 50F. During a 3 mile crawl speed in heavy stop/go traffic, the transmission temperature went to 176F which is fine.

However and ironically, once out of traffic and driving up 1.5 miles up the steepest hill in the area to get home (I live at the highest point in the area) the transmission temperature actually dropped down to 162F while going up the hill.

Just goes to show that cool clean air in front of the truck makes a world of difference with transmission temperature...

For towing with a 4,000 lb trailer, in the summer at 100F. I have seen the transmission temp only get up to 210F on a very steep grade (3500' ascent in 8 miles.)

been watching transmission temps for the last few days and it averages around 123F
I don't know where I got the 195F number from.... I either made a mistake or it did read that but only the one time and that was just one day after I had a transmission flush and fluid changes at the Dodge dealer.... I'll keep an eye on it but I think we're good now.

If it was the day of or day after the flush I would suspect you had some entrained air in the fluid causing the heat to not be dissipated as it should. As the fluid is worked the air gets taken out, so this may explain the high temps you saw then and the now normal temps you are seeing now.

In regards to transmission normal operating temps, reading what the new 2013's are about, the objective is to get the engine and transmission up to normal (optimal) operating temp as quick as possible in regards to efficiency. They are talking about 190 F for the optimum running temperature for the transmission, so I think anything close to that is fine. I know concerns are that temps up to 220 F would be nasty but that's what the tranny cooler is for, keeping it in check. This is redundant info but educating is good.

Thanks for this thread! I also tow a trailer, and transmission is my biggest worry.

New Ram owner (couple months) My transmission temps run in the 180 degree area, Outside temp was 32 degrees. I haven’t seen it above190, but this is local driving, no x-way driving and never towed... the temp bar (in evic) quickly goes to just above half way mark and stays there. This seems really high to me and a concern because this Summer when I am towing, outside temps will be at or above 100 degrees.... is there a thread that discusses was to lower this temp?
