Replacing temp spare tire with a full size tire

Hi everyone. It has been one of those weeks.....I picked up two nails in one of my tires and one of them of course was in the sidewall. The tire shop will not patch it and a plug will not hold. So that leaves me with buying a new tire.

Anyway, that is not my real question! I realized through this process that Dodge put on a temporary use spare tire on the truck, which I do not like. Has anyone gotten a 20" steel wheel and put a real tire on as a spare? Will it fit under the bed? The nice thing is that a missing TPS sensor will not impair driveability (unlike my Charger did), so I don't need to buy one.

The reason that I ask is that I'm buying 2 new tires and one is still good and I would hate for it to go to waste really, especially when there is a crappy donut back there.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks
Bruce

Even though the tire on my 2011 looks like a full size tire, its is not. In fact it say for temporary use only. What i did is buy another 20" rim off ebay for $200 and had mounted and balanced with a real tire 275 60 r 20. The only modification you need to make is removing the fake chrome off the rim so the spare tire holder fits through the rim. Once thats done it fits perfectly. Now that I have larger tires (275 65 r20) I need to find out if the 1" larger tire fits underneath...

Guys, you are confusing the two descriptions. All ram trucks come with a full size spare, however they are for temporary use as they don't have the same mileage rating as a standard tire. A doughnut tire is skinny as hell and only serves well for a front runner at the track or nursing your car to the shop.

Yes, the spare tire is mounted on a 17" wheel, that doesn't stop it from being a full sized spare if yours came with a 20" wheel. No truck that comes with 20s has a 20" wheel as a spare unless it comes with a set of big brakes that have a minimum wheel diameter. All factory spare tires are designed to do is get you to a shop, if you want to be able to swap the wheel and not have an ugly assed rim then buy yourself a matching wheel and tire. Oh, and a 35" mud tire doesn't fit under the bed using the winch system. We laugh at Jeep guys that only buy 4 over-sized tires and have a stock sized spare, they'll find out what happens one day.

I'm sorry,I should have been more clear when I posted the question. My truck does have a full size spare, but it is a temporary tire, not a "real" tire. My '05 Ram had a real spare tire with the factory 20" rims. Sometime by the time the '10 came out, they changed the spare to a fake tire.

So, has anyone with factory 20" rims swapped the temporary spare for a real tire and not had problems with the TPS system?

Thanks

I replaced the temp tire with an LT285/70R17 E (10 ply) tire on that spare 17" rim. The tire is the same diameter as your OEM 20" tire. No need to modify your chrome-clad 20" wheel.
