I know this is an old thread, but my 2017 2500 just started doing this. Had it in at the dealer and they couldn't get me in so sent me across the street. Dealer and second place saw the stored error code. Second place stated the "part" wouldn't be available until December. Sounds like there is more than one part needed I would rather take it through the dealer 1) so there is a record of the repair and 2) we purchased an extended warranty through the dealer that the second place would not honor. Reaching out if you can be of any assistance. I have not followed up with the dealer since September. Concerned that we tow a 7000# camper and the EBS error.
thanks

Another truck with the same issue. 2018 Dodge Ram 2500. Parts were replaced under warranty in 2020, and now I'm 2 months past the repair warranty and thus was quoted almost $2,000 for replacement of the ABS module and Hydraulic Control. No guarantee that it won't happen a third time as well...

Hi, Anders here in BC, Canada. I have a 2017 Ram 3500 Longhorn, 146,000 km (90,000 miles). I have the same issue; it seems like this problem has been around for a few years by looking at the dates of this thread. I have the ABS light and traction control light coming on intermittently and the warning "Service ABS system" and "Service Electronic Braking System." (we pull a 35-foot 5th wheel trailer) It is always worse on rough roads. If the warnings are off for a while and I go over a bridge, as soon as the front wheels drive over the bridge joint or seam, the lights come on. This, in turn, kicks out the cruise control, a safety precaution, I assume. I took it down to my local dealer here in Campbell River, and they told me my truck: "has an active code C0020-01 - ABS Pump Motor Control-General Electrical Failure – which according to Chrysler, means that the Hydraulic Control Unit ( for the ABS ) has an electric internal failure and requires replacement. In some cases, this failure can cause damage to the ECU ( Electric Control Unit ). We have no way to tell if it is damaged until the hydraulic unit is replaced and then we can test the electrical unit. " The part is apparently on backorder and will arrive in January at around $1600 Canadian Thanks, everyone, for posting; it has been very helpful. Cheers, Anders

2018 Ram 3500 HO single wheel CCLB. Having the exact same issue. Bump bump ding ding ding with the service electronic brakes and service abs system. I ordered this truck brand new and also work for Stellantis as a skilled trades electrician. Hopefully @ramcares is paying attention to these posts and creates a recall for this issue. I have to be honest the truck has been great and no issues except for this and the dreaded screen delaminating that also plagues these trucks. Only other thing is third brake light started leaking at a year and half of ownership and had to have the windshield removed to replace the headliner. But all and all I’ve been very happy with the truck.

My only question is has anyone tried replacing the 2 modules on there own? Without the dealership? Anybody had any luck with doing this??

Thanks everyone for your time

Hey all,

I have had the same thing on and off for about two years on my 18. When it first started happening I turned to the forums and it was recommended to check all of the wiring that runs along the bed to see if there were any pinch or rub points on the wiring. I found quite a few and cut some small radiator hose to create buffers between the wiring and the metal from front to back in areas that I could see rubbed or may rub in the future then cleaned any exposed wires and used electric tape to cover up any bare metal.

I found areas that were raw all along the bed and just behind the rear driver's side tire as well. At this point I only had about 30k on my truck and I'm the only owner. Putting bandaids (electrical tape) on these spots made the irritating bell and light go away for a long time. Over the course of the last two years, it comes and goes. I see absolutely no performance issues with the truck at all and should probably suck it up and replace the HCU but like some have mentioned in here... Between cleaning the brake dust off really well and making sure there are no raw wires, the problem has generally gone away for me long enough to justify not getting a new HCU.

This is absolutely not a cure-all as I'm closing in on 60k miles now and occasionally the gremlin eats after midnight. I don't know how important the HCU is supposed to be but beyond being annoying... I feel like if I haven't really seen performance-related issues after being stubborn this long and towing heavy loads, I don't feel like it's that big of an issue. The only reason, I'm on this thread is that I'm going to a pick-and-pull tomorrow for toy and it crossed my mind. I thought if some of you are still living this nightmare maybe what has worked on and off for me can buy you some time until you can replace it since everything is so expensive right now.

I can't tell you for sure, but I don't see why not. Just realize you won't have traction control, ABD, and maybe cruise...
It's your call.
I'd call the dealer that did the work and get it scheduled so they know it did it again. Then call Ram Cares and file a case.
Follow up to my previous post. Took it back to the dealer who did the original repair, part is out of warranty. Took it to the dealer I boughy it from where I have an extended warranty. They say the ABS module is bad which means this will be the third ABS module for a truck that has less than 90000 miles. Based on my experience and from all the other similar posts something is inherently wrong with these parts and if RAM cared they 1) should have an abudent of these parts avaiable to cover all the needed parts 2) should investigate the root cause of tge problem and issue a recall and 3) should cover the full cost to replace these bad units. I know none of these will happen which is going to drive a loyal Dodge/RAM customer to the comptetion. Like everything else nowadays, custoner service and satisfaction has no meaning.

I am having the same problem with a 2018 2500 LARAMIE RAM DIESEL. I took it to the local dealership and, after three hours of waiting, I was told that the repair would cost $811, I would have to pay up front, but the kicker was, the parts are on back order and they have no idea when they will get them. So I ended up paying a $110 diagnostic charge on a problem the dealership had absolutely no ability to fix. Now, it’s bad enough that this issue is deactivating my ABS and kicking me out of cruise control. But, the fact that the problem is intermittent, the system going in and out of service at random intervals causing the warning tone to bing over and over again for hours on end, it becomes far too easy to ignore the warning tone altogether, allowing a more serious issue to go unnoticed until it is too late. I must be honest, I love my truck, but given that RAM seems to show no interest in fixing this issue, despite this clearly being a design flaw that has existed for years, I am seriously considering trading this truck in for a F250 or a Nissan Titan.

Gotta love being legitly 136 miles out of warranty. Took to the dealer and they said sorry, our of warranty and plus the parts are on month backorder. Time to go back to Chevy once I figure out how and when to fix it, for now, fuse is pulled and pray I don't need ABS in the snow. I have owned 8 FCA products and with how crappy this 2018 has been and the 2017 Pacifica that had nothing but issues, I'm out after this pile of crap is fixed. I also sent this post along with many others to a Class Action Lawyer and he is extremely interested in this one.

Ram just lost a customer after 4 Rams in a row since 2010, my Silverados never failed me, the last 2 Rams have.

@ramcares
Add me to the list as well with my 2018 Power Wagon. My truck is also out of warranty. I've been dealing with this problem since September 2022.

Dealership diagnosed my Truck with C0020-01 ABS Pump Motor Control - General Electrical Failure for $236.95. No parts available due to a "National Back Order". The Dealership refused to order the part until I prepaid for it even though they had absolutely no idea when it might possibly be available for another $678.95 plus tax. The total estimated cost was for the repair is >$1414.00 plus tax assuming Ram bothers to actually starts manufacturing the part again.

I declined to provide the Dealership with an interest free loan. I'm sure once the part does become available the Dealership will want to charge me another $236.95 to confirm their original diagnoses before they allow me to give them a boatload of money to fix what sure seems like a manufactures defected part.

Ram Cares on the phone was less than helpful.

I filed a NHTSA safe complaint and saw that there is a Class Action lawsuit for Texas truck owners. Perhaps there should be a national Class Action lawsuit?

Ram recommends replacing the HCU first, and if the C0020-01 code shows after the replacement to then replace the ABS Module. They explain it in a TSB from 2020: S2005000004 RAM Technical Service Bulletin
On my truck they followed this procedure and the ABS module did not need replacing. No code after the HCU was replaced and the ABS module did not need replacement Last I heard it was the ABS module that is in short supply and the HCU was available. @ramcares can be difficult, but they eventually helped me. It did take time and persistence.

THX for the info but the Anti-lock Brake System Hydraulic Control Unit part # 68143491AB (that supersedes defective part # 68143491AA) is on nation back order. The Mopar parts Department told me today that they expect it to be back in stock in 4 to 6 weeks (mid January 2023) but they did not sound very confident.

When mine was repaired in May it got the old HCU version, not the new one. Wondering how long I have until it needs to be replaced with the update. Anyone heard if the ABS module is still on restricted supply? I was lucky that I did not need both or I would have waited longer for the repair.

Only time will tell.. mine took 36K and 4 years to go bad... Hopefully you get that and more out of it.

No idea on the module. I have not had an opportunity to progress that far in the repair process.
