It's not Dodge Ram anymore

Just curious why a web forum dedicated to Dodge and Ram trucks titles this gen 4 portions of the forum "Dodge Ram"?

The Ram division was created when Chrysler joined with Fiat. Though Ram is owned by the Chryser/Fiat corporation, it is not be confused for being the same company as Dodge since they split apart in 2010. Ram kept the original logo of the Dodge trucks (full curl bighorn ram) when they split, but they no longer produce the full size truck line with Dodge. That's exactly why you will not find a single word that says "Dodge" anywhere on the newer trucks, nor will you hear the word "Dodge" mentioned in a commercial or other advertisement. Technically speaking, Chrysler produces the Hemi engine. Though the new eco-diesel engines are produced by an Italian company called VM Motori which is owned 50/50 by Chrysler Fiat and General Motors (GM). And to venture further, Cummins is a whole 'nother company.

So either Chrysler, VM Motori, or Cummins produce the engines and Ram makes the truck, so where does Dodge come in with the new trucks?....Nowhere to be exact. Point being that to call a late model Ram truck a "Dodge Ram" is completely incorrect.

You could maybe call the new trucks a "Chrysler Ram", but that doesnt come off the tongue to well. ;)

Just some info I thought I'd share for folks that may not have been aware of this.

I do find these threads to be somewhat pedantic.

Dodge has a proud history of building trucks and I am in no hurry to distance Ram from that. Ram was not spun off into its own brand until 2011; 2009 and 2010 Rams have "Dodge" above the Ram's head on the tailgate like on the logo at the top of this page. They still said "Dodge" on some places like the upper console tray until 2013.

Alas, the 4th gen Ram started out as a Dodge, and people who are not Ram people will still refer to them as Dodge. It doesn't bother me, just keep in mind that some vendors don't recognize it yet either so when you are looking for parts you may need to look under Dodge (make) and Ram 1500 (model) or Ram (make) and 1500 (model).

I certainly don't get offended when people call them Dodge-its just not that big of a deal to me

Most vendors list the make as Ram now. Ram split in late 2010, not 2011. So the 2009 and 2010 trucks had already been produced before they split.

Technically you are right when you say a 2010 is a Dodge Ram. But if you pay attention to what part of the forum you are in right now, it says "2014 Dodge Ram forum". That is not correct. I have 2014 "Ram" Laramie. Dodge had nothing to do with making my truck.

Dodge only produces cars.

Anyone can say what they want and express their opinion, but to say a 2011 to 2017 Ram truck is a Dodge is wrong.

Its been that way since 1981. Better than super:super::fight: duty

Dodge designed the truck

I do have a 2009 Dodge Ram, says it all over the truck. When this fourth generation forum was started the truck was called a Dodge Ram. It was called a Dodge Ram up until the end of December 2009, so about a year and a half of production. Beginning in January 2010 the trucks became the Ram brand.

In reality it was just a split on paper for business and tax purposes and for FCA in the beginning if things didn't go well it would be easier to sell the Ram truck division and not have to to deal with splitting the cars and trucks for a buyer.

Exactly.
Ive read that its done that way so it would be easy to sell off the profitable RAM (& Jeep) brands as separate entities when the rest of Chrysler goes belly-up.

I'm sure there are some Datsun owners going through the same thing

As long as I don't have the nickle dime issues like the GM & Ford
it's not a big deal to me, around Christmas time I had an old timer
tell me what a nice looking ( Power Wagon ) Sparky is :158:

I love my Ram 1500, but for some reason I just don't really mind if someone calls it a Dodge.
You should be proud when someone refers to your truck as a Dodge! :smiley_thumbs_up:

And speaking of Chrysler names that seem to live on...
I've owned 3 "Plymouth" vehicles over the years.

My 1961 Valiant and my 74 Duster had the same model Slant-6 engine in em' and my 1987 Voyager had a 4 cylinder engine that was closely based on that same old Slant-6 design.
Just saying

I call my truck a RAM but I don't give any thought to people calling it a Dodge. Even my Dealer advertises it as a Dodge RAM. I agree the correct name is RAM but Dodge is a great brand with a excellent history. It could be worse and mistaken for a Ford or Chevy.

Since you're big on technicalities. And no offense, but you're kind of being a dick about all this " technical shit ", but since you started it. The USOS-4000 Oxygen sensor that the RAM truck uses, is also used in the DODGE challenger, which, happens to be made by DODGE.

I could isolate, and locate the bolts part by part if you want to get " technical " about where the part was made, and which company owns it. You did specifically state that dodge had no part in your RAM truck, and you'd be wrong. That sensor is being used on the 3.6Pentastar, which is ALSO used in the DODGE Durango. As well as the HEMI.

Moreover, the 3.6 was built by Chrysler, and we use it in DODGE trucks, but it was co-engineered by DODGE, as they wanted it for the JEEP, and the upcoming luxury models back in 2011 ( Chrysler 300 ), and Dodge Durango. MANY, MANY of the OEM replacement parts are built under the DODGE name, to be used on DODGE trucks, any MANY of the OEM parts are also under the Chrysler name. in fact, DODGE has 3 patents that I could find on that motor, which, happens to be used in the DODGE ram. So... while I understand what you're saying, you're completely wrong.

With all of that said, Agreed, it's just called a RAM now, and if you had left it at that, I'd agree, but since you went on a tangent about how dodge had no part in your truck.. i felt like it was important to educate you.

Like I said, Dodge designed the 4th gen Rams.

Thats like saying the Prowler wasn't a Plymouth because it was rebadged to a chrysler for its last 2 years

This is a all about nothing discussion, that got several more posts than i thought it ever would

a bit off topic
There are no Ram dealerships
You can go to any Dodge, Jeep, or Chrysler dealerships for parts & service
In fact if you are in Bristol Connecticut, you can go to a Nissan dealership for Ram parts & service
If you are in Thomaston Connecticut, the Dodge dealership won't touch Ram from out of State, they gave me an appointment for a month away, yet the next day my Sister that lives in the town drove in & got immediate service on her vehicle

west of Texarkana Texas, you can go to a GM dealership for Ram parts & service

I guess Branding does not mean to much

Speaking of which. . .

I was working under my 2016 'RAM' today and I noticed that all the UPC tags and stampings on the undercarriage say "Chrysler" not Ram.

Then out of curiosity I checked all the manufacturing stickers on the B-Column... Nope, no sign of the word RAM there either.

To be really sure I then opened the hood and looked around the engine compartment.
There were lots of stickers in there!
Unfortunately no sign of 'RAM' anywhere under the hood either, just a bunch of 'Mopar' stampings and one FCA-US-LLC sticker.

Seems if I pulled those cheesy "RAM 3500" emblems off my front doors we'd have no clue that RAM had anything to do with the entire build.
Just saying.

EDIT...
To be fair about it I should also mention that I didn't see the word 'Dodge' anywhere either, so I guess it's a wash. ;)

I really don't mind when I'm talking to someone and they call it a Dodge. A guy just did that to me today when I was picking up tile for my house. He was asking about my truck and said "Man I just love how the Dodge trucks look". I didn't correct him. We just kept on talking.

I do agree with the comment about if you owned a lot of Dodge trucks in the past that you keep calling them dodge. Reminds me of when the new owners of the local ski-resort tried to rename it for "marketing" reasons. Isn't a single native or long time local that will name the resort by its new name. The original name will alway be what it is known as to us
