Your 2017 does not have and will never have Carplay or Android Auto. The hardware doesn't support it. The 2013-2017 8.4 models do support SIRI Eyes Free (with a software update) but that is an Apple thing and it is not the same as Carplay.

The 2018+ RAM's got new hardware that supports AA & Carplay. Those are the UAS (no NAV) and UAQ (NAV) units. If you go to Infotainment.com they sell retrofit kits, they are not cheap though. Replacing the unit is the ONLY way you are going to get AA or Carplay in your truck. If someone is telling you it is just a software update away on your existing hardware they are full it. If that is a Chrysler employee they should just go ahead and turn in their badge!

I'm in the process of looking myself.

But there are posts all over talking about Android Auto with 2014+ 8.4 units (from various Chrysler brands). And my truck had it on when I bought it but within a few days it was removed by Uconnect. So I'm confused...

some of the FCA had Apple Car Play in 2017

https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/available-models/

Dodge

2017 - 2018 Challenger
2017 - 2018 Charger

Chrysler

2017 - 2018 300

Jeep
2017 - 2018 Compass
The compass radio might possibly work in a Ram :4-dontknow:

If the 2017 Ram came with SPRINT as the service provider, it likely does not have Apple Car Play
If the radio uses AT&T as the service provider, it is very likely to have Apple Car Play

I don't think anyone with a stock headunit is running Android Auto on a 2014 (or a 2017)

Like any car forum, there was a lot of theory and speculation about support after Chrysler announced they would be getting adding AA & CarPlay at some point. No one, outside of Google/Apple/Car Manufacturers knew at the time what it would actually take to add it, so there was a ton of speculation. The uConnect 8.4 A/AN (2013-2017) units do not have the power to support AA or CarPlay, thus the UAS/UAQ units in the '18+.

Trust me, I'd love to have it myself but it isn't happening without replacing the headunit and media hub (usb in armrest). I was looking for any discussions around the hub when I found this thread.

Something is not making sense here. You say it can't be on the 8.4 radios but there is a lot of info out there about it being on 8.4 radios from 2017 and earlier. Here's an article from a Dodge dealer's web site talking about it.

https://www.dodgechryslerjeepofmary...marysville.com/blogs/1694/dodge-chrysler-information/use-android-auto-uconnect/

And there's that detail of it actually being present on my vehicle. It was on the screen when I did the test drive. It was on the screen the first couple days I had the truck but within a week it disappeared with a message saying they had to remove it.

The only thing that makes sense is that they deployed it but it had problems so they pulled it.

That article has two large errors in the first two sentences, they used the word "all" instead of "some". But they are correct when they say that it is available on the 4th generation of uConnect. The 4th generation was introduced on a few FCA models (300, Charger, & Challenger) but not all FCA vehicles. This 4th generation's model numbers are UAS (no NAV) and UAQ (NAV). The 3rd generation was A (no NAV) and AN (NAV). RAM used the 3rd generation in our trucks from 2013 through 2017. They moved to the 4th generation in 2018. The 4th generation is the only unit that supports AA & CarPlay. Look at the buttons in the YouTube video on that link that you posted, they are the buttons from a 4th generation unit.

That article was also written in 2018, well into the 2018 model year. So maybe they meant 2018 instead of 2017 in the article. Either way, your only hope is to buy a unit from a 2018.

I certainly don't care enough to buy something to get it. I'm just 1) confused how my truck had it, it was disabled, and now people are telling me it never did; and 2) irritated that Chrysler/Uconnect/dealer has no clue and no straight story about it. To everybody I've talked to there they think it should have it and just work.

do You by chance know what version uconnect you we’re running before it went missing? Maybe an ota update removed it. I bought my 2017 like 7 months ago and it does not have it. I also learned the pandora, slacker and other apps my 2013 had are no longer available in newer years.

I don't know. It was only there a short time and I hadn't even had much time to play with the truck before it disappeared.

It's not that big of a deal, it is just irritating. And stupid that with all the integration available these days that a vehicle touchscreen display cannot simply mirror stuff from your phone. I'm not losing sleep over it...

I had the chance to try Android Auto out on a rental a couple of months ago and really wish this had been deployed on the 2017 Rams. Especially considering it was deployed on other FCA vehicles. My question is, isn't the hardware the same in these vehicles that have Android Auto and therefore, shouldn't they be able to update the Rams to the new software? My other question is, why is there no other place to buy a stock 8.4 head unit from the 2018 Rams than Infotainment.com? Nothing against them, but why doesn't FCA sell these through Mopar? The price on this upgrade is going to be around $2133 in Canada. Frustrating beyond belief. From viewing the installation video on Infotainment.com, it's a straight-up swap out and plug-and-play install. I think a grand would be a fair price, to be honest, 2 grand is just... Woah baby.

Unfortunately the hardware is different from 2018 and 2017 and before. 2017 and before is made by (I think) Harman Kardon and the 2018 is made by (again, I think) Panasonic. I could be wrong with the actual manufacturers, but I know for sure they are different. Along with the manufacturer change, was a hardware change that enabled Android Auto / Apple Car Play. The 2017 and earlier just don't have the hardware to do it, so a software update will never be available to enable it. Which is too bad because I would love to have Android Auto!

Hit up the auto wrecking yards for a 2018 or newer Ram or the fancy 2018 Jeep models
don't look at the cars or cheaper Jeeps, they don't run the same Canbus system

As it was pointed out the hardware is different from 2017 to 2018 (Harmon -> Panasonic). I did the swap with a unit that I bought off of ebay for ~$800 USD, plus the cost of the hub, plus the cost of the custom harness for the new style USB hub (CarPlay and Android Auto require a higher amperage than the old hub supplied). All in I was at ~950 USD. It was all plug and play from there and worked on the first shot. I then turned around and sold my old unit for $500 on ebay so I'm in it all for about $450 USD. Best $450 upgrade I've ever spent! I use Carplay every day. There is another Ram Forum that they probably don't want me cross linking to that has really good instructions.

There are additional parts for some of the earlier (2013-2015) Rams that may have to be bought as well. There is also an odd thing on only some trucks where the heat blend door no longer fully moves and the blend door controller has to be replaced (its cheap). I didn't have that issue and I did my radio last fall.

I had a 2017 8.4 headunit but now have a 2018 headunit i bought from infotainment.com. A lot cheaper than buying a new truck. Car Play works great so I suspect Andriod Auto would work as well. The unit I got had satellite radio activated so I assume I will get a year out of it. I was not interested in paying for the nav updates that come out sparingly, so to me it was worth it. And when satellite radio stops, I will use my internet satellite account on car play.
